For an MVP, a small senior agency team usually beats both a solo freelancer and an in-house hire. Freelancers are cheapest per hour (vetted platforms list seniors from about $55–100/h), but you become the project manager and carry the risk if they leave. In-house hiring takes months before the first commit. A senior team at CEE rates of $60–80/h ships a 660-hour MVP for about $40k–53k. Freelancers win for tasks under about 100 hours.
Three options at a glance
| Factor | Freelancer | Senior boutique agency | In-house hire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior rate or cost | $55–100+/h on vetted platforms | $60–80/h CEE; $140–200+/h US | Salary + ~43% benefits and taxes (BLS ratio) + recruiting |
| Time to start | Days to weeks | 1–3 weeks | Months |
| Skills covered | One person's stack | Backend, frontend, DevOps, QA | Who you hired |
| Who manages the work | You | Vendor's lead engineer; you set priorities | You or your CTO |
| QA and code review | Rarely included | Included if you choose well | Only if you hire for it |
| Continuity risk | High: illness, new client, gone | Low: team covers absences | Medium: one or two people |
| Best for | Bounded tasks, prototypes, fixes | MVPs, rebuilds, rescues, product teams | Long-term core product |
Freelance rates: Arc and Lemon.io listings. Agency rates: 2026 vendor surveys. Benefits: BLS June 2026 (wages ~70% of employer cost). All approximate.
The word that matters is senior
An MVP is a dozen decisions a week about scope, architecture and what to cut. A good freelancer can make them, but nobody reviews their pull requests, and when they leave, your product stops.
In-house fails on time. An agency done wrong sends juniors and a project manager. Done right, it sends a senior team that already works together.
Pick by the job
-
Freelancer
Under 100 hours, clear spec
-
Senior agency
Whole product, one deadline
-
Agency rescue
Half-finished codebase left behind
-
In-house
Long roadmap, technical leader
When each option is right
-
Freelancer
A landing page, a webhook fix, a prototype. You can write tickets and review code yourself.
-
Senior agency team
Auth, payments, admin, deployment, QA on one deadline. See MVP development.
-
Agency, to finish a stalled build
A team can audit, stabilise and finish it. See software rescue.
-
In-house
Software is the moat and you have a technical leader. See in-house vs outsourcing.
Illustrative example: one MVP, three ways
Illustrative example with stated assumptions. A booking web app estimated at 660 senior hours, from our [MVP development cost](/cost/mvp-development-cost) guide.
| Cost line | Solo freelancer | Senior CEE agency team | In-house (US, 2 hires) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rate or cost basis | $55–100/h | $60–80/h | $160k salary each, ~$229k loaded |
| Hours or months | ~760 h (15% rework assumed) | 660 h | 4 build months after 3 hiring (assumed) |
| Build cost | $41.8k–76k | $39.6k–52.8k | ~$152k loaded salary |
| Recruiting | $0 (platform fees may apply) | $0 | $48k–80k (assumed 15–25% fee x 2) |
| Calendar time to launch | 4–6 months (assumed) | 2–4 months (assumed) | 7+ months (assumed) |
| Total | ~$42k–76k + your time | ~$40k–53k | ~$200k–232k |
Illustrative example. Rework, hiring time, build duration and fees are assumptions. Rates: Arc, Lemon.io, 2026 vendor surveys. Loaded cost: BLS June 2026 ratio. In-house buys a team for years, not just an MVP.
Typical agency vs senior boutique
Typical agency
- Sales call with an account manager
- 40-page proposal, vague hours
- Juniors do the work, seniors 'oversee'
- Change requests for every surprise
- Code in the agency's repo
Senior boutique (how we work)
- First call with the engineer who writes the code
- Written scope and one fixed price
- Senior engineers only
- On fixed-scope MVPs, estimation overruns are ours
- Your repo, 100% IP from day one
Fixed price. We eat the overruns.
For MVPs we send a fixed written quote after a free scoping call. The price for the agreed written scope is what you pay. If our estimate was wrong, the extra hours are ours. Changes you request are quoted separately first.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency to build my MVP?
For a full MVP with auth, payments, admin and deployment, a small senior agency team is usually safer: QA, code review and continuity are included and people work in parallel. A freelancer fits bounded tasks under about 100 hours you can review yourself.
Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?
Per hour, often; vetted platforms list senior freelancers from about $55/h. Per project, not always. Add QA, your management time, rework and the risk of them leaving. A senior CEE team at $60–80/h often lands at a similar total.
Freelancer vs agency vs in-house: which is best for a new product?
For the first version: a senior agency team, with freelancers for small tasks. Once the product has traction and a long roadmap, start hiring in-house and keep the agency for capacity. In-house first is usually the slowest way to launch.
What happens if my freelancer disappears mid-project?
Transfer repo and cloud credentials to your accounts immediately. Then get someone to decide what is worth keeping. A free code audit gives a written keep, refactor or rebuild verdict. See how to take over a software project.
How do I know an agency will not put juniors on my project?
Meet the engineers before signing, ask for their CVs and recent pull requests, and name them in the contract. Boutique senior teams, where you speak to the person writing the code, remove the problem by design.
What should I ask a freelancer or agency before hiring them?
