To hire Java developers in 2026, look for seniors on Java 21 or 25 and Spring Boot 3 or 4 who design modular monoliths before microservices, understand transactions and JPA performance, run Kafka consumers idempotently, secure APIs with OAuth 2 and test with Testcontainers. Yarify's founder has led Java backends for 9+ years. We provide senior Java engineers monthly with 2 weeks' notice, or as fixed-price projects.
Twelve microservices for three people? No.
Many teams hire Java developers and get twelve microservices, a Kubernetes cluster and half the week spent on deploys. Our default: a modular monolith with enforced boundaries.
One deployable, one schema per module, Spring Modulith or ArchUnit tests guarding the lines. Split a module out later, when scaling or team ownership demands it.
What our Java developers do
-
Spring Boot upgrades
Boot 2 to 3 or 4, javax to jakarta, Security and Hibernate 6 changes. Staged, behind tests.
-
Modular monoliths
Microservice clarity without microservice operations. Boundaries enforced by tests, not good intentions.
-
Events and Kafka
Outbox pattern, idempotent consumers, ordered processing where it matters, replay when it fails.
-
OAuth and SSO
Spring Security, OIDC, SSO with Microsoft Entra, Google or Keycloak, method-level authorization.
-
Enterprise integrations
SOAP, REST, file drops, ERPs, banking APIs. Mapping layers keep their mess out of your domain.
-
Performance
Virtual threads, N+1 queries removed, pools sized from load tests, GraalVM where cold starts matter.
Hire Java developers three ways
-
Augmentation
A Spring Boot senior in your sprint.
-

How a Java engagement starts
-
Walk us through it
Modules, integrations, Java and Spring versions, pain points. We say whether we have the right engineer.
-
Meet who writes the code
You interview the engineer directly, with the questions below.
-
Run it locally first
Your Git, CI and environments. We run the app in Docker before touching anything.
-
Reviewed increments
Small pull requests with tests, migrations reviewed before deploy, weekly written updates.
Proof of a senior Java developer
- Explains why @Transactional on a self-invoked method does nothing
- Finds N+1 queries in logs and fixes them with fetch joins
- Uses an outbox so events and database writes can't diverge
- Writes idempotent Kafka consumers for at-least-once delivery
- Tests with Testcontainers against real Postgres or Kafka
- Has upgraded a real app across a major Spring Boot version
Interview questions for Java developers
-
When would you split a module into a service?
Independent scaling, separate team ownership, different release cadence. Best practice is not a reason.
-
A user is charged but no order exists. Why?
Transaction boundaries, an external call inside a transaction, a missing outbox.
-
A Kafka message keeps failing. Now what?
Retries with backoff, a dead-letter topic, alerts, a replay path, idempotent handling.
-
Secure an API for a web app and partners.
OAuth 2 with distinct clients and scopes, short-lived tokens, audit logs. Not one shared API key.
Java developer rates by region
Hourly market bands from industry surveys. Not our price list: we quote after a free call.
| Region | Junior | Mid-level | Senior |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $70–100 | $100–140 | $140–200+ |
| Western Europe | $55–80 | $80–110 | $110–160 |
| Central & Eastern Europe | $30–45 | $45–60 | $60–80 |
| Latin America | $35–50 | $50–65 | $65–90 |
| South & Southeast Asia | $20–32 | $32–42 | $42–55 |
A senior CEE Java engineer runs about $9.6k–12.8k per full-time month at market rates. See software developer rates.

Questions buyers ask us
How much does it cost to hire a Java developer?
Industry surveys put senior Java developers at roughly $60–80 per hour in Central and Eastern Europe, $110–160 in Western Europe and $140–200+ in the US. A senior CEE month is about $9.6k–12.8k. We quote monthly or fixed-price after a free call.
Is Java a good choice for a new backend?
Yes, when the domain has many rules, integrations or compliance needs and the system will live for years. Modern Spring Boot is fast to build with. If the backend is thin and the team writes TypeScript, Node.js may be simpler.
Can you upgrade our old Spring Boot application?
Yes. Boot 2 to 3 or 4 usually means javax to jakarta, Spring Security config changes and Hibernate 6. We do it in stages behind tests, and a defined upgrade can be quoted at a fixed price.
Do you build microservices?
When there's a reason to. We usually start with a modular monolith: one deployable with strict module boundaries. It's cheaper to run and easier to change, and modules can be split out later.
Do your Java developers use MongoDB or only SQL?
Both. Spring Data JPA with Postgres for relational domains, Spring Data MongoDB where documents fit, as on our content automation platform. The data model decides, not habit.
What happens to the code if we stop working together?
Nothing changes ownership, because it was always yours. Code lives in your repository, the contract assigns IP to you from day one, and ending takes 2 weeks' notice. We hand over documentation and access cleanly.
